MP3 to CD

by SCOTT GERKE

Like many students on campus, I have a collection of Mp3s. Mp3s are sound files that are smaller then regular wav files and are played on Mp3 players such as Winamp or Sonique. Some songscan be downloaded from the net using scour.net or other search engines. One can receive them through data transfers on ICQ, a popular chat program.

One can also borrow CDs from people and "rip" them using a "ripper." A "ripper" pulls wav files off of a CD. Once they are off the CD, you can convert the files into Mp3s using a program called an encoder. All of these programs are available free on the Internet. Some have expiring codes built in where they stop working after a certain amount of days. A popular ripper is a program called Wdac141 and a popular encoder/decoder is a program called Zipaudio.

A Burner, as rewritables are sometimes called, can be used to store data or to make copies of CDs you own that you don't want to lose. At least this is what they are legally for. It is not illegal to make copies for your own personal use, but if you sell or give them to other people it is a crime that can have severe penalties. A good CD Re-writable Drive costs about 365$ with tax but you can have fun with it for years.
