"Rush Hour" Explodes in the Box Office

by BRIAN KORTE

When I first saw the trailer for this movie back in December, I knew it would be a hit. After repeatedly watching the rental "5th Element" and my own copy of "Friday," I knew that actor Chris Tucker was one actor I wanted to see again. Jackie Chan has done a series of B-rated movies that have not been too successful, but have always come through with entertainment. When I heard that the two would act together in Rush Hour, I became excited. Very excited. It came out on Friday the 18th of September, and since then, I have seen it twice.

The premise seems to be original. After almost a century of film-making, hardly anything is original. In "Rush Hour," Chinese Consul Han comes to America with his family. Han's daughter gets snatched by the Chinese mob, and Han sends his "best man" to America to hunt down the kidnappers and retrieve his daughter. Of course, Han's "best man" is Jackie Chan, who plays Detective Inspector Lee.

The FBI in charge of tracking down Han's daughter wants to deter Lee from getting involved with their operation. Their solution? To find the worst officer in the L.A. Police Department and stick him with the "menial" task of baby-sitting the Hong Kong inspector. Comedy ensues when the loud-mouthed detective James Carter (played by Tucker) is forced to watch detective Lee in the city.

Of course, Lee's personal agenda differs from Carter's. Lee is the personal friend of Consul Han, and loves Han's daughter as well. Carter just wants to fulfill his "bull-shit assignment" and keep Lee from entering the Consulate. This doesn't happen, and trouble begins when the two mutually decide to hunt for Han's daughter.

I'm going to stop with the plot now, because I want you all to watch this. It is worth the cost of the ticket, definitely. (Remember, if you go to the NRV mall to watch it, bring your student ID and knock a dollar off your cost.)

Check out "Rush Hour." It'll be worth your while.
