"There's Something About Mary"

Hair gel

by JACK VASVARY

I just got back from seeing "There's Something About Mary" and I must say it's one of the funniest slap-stick-esque movies I've seen in a while. It is some of the best work the Farrelly brothers have done so far. If you're looking for a good laugh, this is the movie for you.

Unlike "Dumb and Dumber" and "Kingpin," this movie actually has substance to it. Its more like a romantic comedy with plenty of toilet humor. I actually cared about the characters and wanted Ted (Ben Stiller) and Mary (Cameron Diaz) to get together. The movie also has plenty of twists to add to the chaos of the story. You won't know until the very end who will win Mary's heart.

All of the actors in this movie gave great performances. No, they won't be winning any Oscars, but everybody did their job. Ben Stiller was funny and charming as was Cameron Diaz. W. Earl Brown was hilarious as Mary's brother Warren especially when it came to his character's ears. (once you see the movie you'll know what I mean.) Matt Dillon played the perfect "bad guy." He reminded me of a car salesman. (my apologies if you are one) There is also a surprise cameo by a famous athlete who also gives a pretty good performance.

I found the humor in this movie to be quite refreshing. Most comedies today are too predictable and they just aren't as funny as they used to be however; with 'Mary' I found myself in tears from laughing so hard. The opening scene, a flashback, is a perfect example of this. Here's where we are introduced to Warren's ear "problem." The scenes with Mary's roommates dog are also classic. I must warn you, this movie isn't for those with weak stomachs. Remember, this is a Farrelly brothers movie. It has some of the most disgusting but hilarious humor. Again, the opening flashback is a perfect example of this. Don't worry though. There is plenty of clean humor too, which is just as funny.

I heard "Brain Candy" wasn't very good. Is it really worth looking into?

Dumb and Dumber was a very funny movie and I hear Kingpin was too. It is not the requirement of a comedy to have "substance". Those two movies aren't romantic comedies so maybe that is why they weren't like "There's something about Mary". Sometimes people get comedy confused with being cute. If you want to see a comedy that is unpredictable, rent "Brain Candy" from the New kids in the Hall.

This movie was the best movie of the summer. It had a weak plot, but somehow it managed to win me over. I saw it three times.

If you have a sick sense of humor this movie will have you squirting coke out your nose, which burns by the way.

There's Something About Mary was a real disappointment. It had no point to it and was just an hour and a half of toilet humor. Don't waste your money on this movie!!!!!!
