Kresge Foundation Challenge Grant

by RACHEL THOMASON

October 13 marked the beginning of the RU Foundation Annual Fund Raising Campaign. Each year, the Radford University Foundation works to strengthen the role of private financial support for many university programs. The Foundation receives gifts from alumni, faculty, staff, friends, parents and private businesses to help support non-state funded programs.

Among the programs the Foundation supports are Academic and Athletic scholarships, McConnell Library, the College of Visual and Performing Arts, Excellence in Teaching Awards, Faculty Research and Development, and the Alumni Association. Collections also fall into the category of "unrestricted" where money goes to the greatest need.

This year, RU applied for and received a challenge grant from the Kresge Foundation. This private foundation, the 15th largest in the U.S., was founded in 1924. Today it supports higher education institutes, health care and human service organizations, arts, sciences, and other public affairs. If Radford can raise financial support and broaden our donor base, the Kresge Foundation will donate $500,000 to support university programs.

The fall 1998 Phone-a-thon, supervised by Assistant Director of Annual Funds, Sue Greco, and Senior Student Erin Schultz, is working to do just that.

For the next month, over 30 students are calling Radford Parents in hopes to help meet the challenge goal. Parents have a year to donate their pledge and are vital in meeting this challenge.

I hope Radford students will encourage their parents to donate to the Parent's Fund. This will also insure that McConnell Library will have enough money to open the Multimedia Center, which will finally bring RU into the 21st century.
