Highlander Festival Great Success for RU

Events Provide a Look at Local Heritage

by JEFF POLLARD

With both Radford's Homecoming and the annual Highlander Festival, there was a flury of excitement on RU's campus this weekend.

Saturday's events were centered in the Moffett Quad. The quad was enclosed by many vendors selling Highlander souvenirs. If you were looking for almost anything Scottish, you could find it. They were selling flags, kilts, and a plethora of other accessories.

There were also a vast variety of organizations represented. Many of the organizations were clans, groups of people that make up a subculture of Scottish tradition.

Events included the Highlander Games, which included the caber toss. There was also a demonstration of two sheep dogs herding five sheep. The two dogs performed flawlessly, amazingly gathering the sheep into their cage as a finale.

Overall, the Highlander Festival was a great opportunity to learn more about the traditions of our regional culture. Moreover, it was a very interesting and entertaining day. If you didn't participate in the Highlander Festival this year, be sure to make plans to attend next year.
