Stupidity: Why? Why? Why?
by Brian Korte
Stupidity. Its something that we all suffer from ocasionally. It can be
a
burden to some, a lifestyle for others.
Take the young black man from Maryland, for example. This dude decides
he has nothing to do. He gets in his light blue pickup truck, and parks in
front of the Chevy Chase Blockbuster Video Store. He pulls his black
ski mask and gun from the glove compartment, and walks into the store. He
holds the $4.75-per-hour clerks up, and demands that they hold still. He then browses the video store for the most recent movies. He takes as many as his arms will hold, slips out the door, and goes to his favorite hideout location. The next weekend, he repeats this at the Columbia, MD, Blockbuster Store. Later that week, he goes and does the same
thing with the Alexandria, VA, store. At the end of two months, he has
succesfully robbed more than 12 video
stores!!
By this time, the police were catching on. (I give them credit for
that. It
usually takes more than 15!)
Anyhow, they searched around, made some sketches, and came up with the
usual
list of suspects. Sure
enough, they got a name, an address, and went to the 30 year-old's
apartment. When no one was home, they
looked around, and saw the light blue pickup truck driving off. They
immediately had it followed. Where did it go? Well, the owner of this
truck,
a young black male, headed out to the store he had just opened. "What
kind
of store?" you ask? Why, a VIDEO store, of course; full of the newly
arrived
movies he had freshly stolen. Not only did the cops find every single
stolen
item in that store, but they observed an even greater stupidity. The
tapes
in this "store" still had the local area Blockbuster labels on them.
This
loser is now spending his days in the prison facility at Lorton, VA,
where
he can enjoy basketball games, and free cable for the next 25-40 years.
This is a true story. This is stupid, people. Stupidity is all around
us.
Idiots breed like rabbits. I am not suggesting that all crooks are
dumb.
My high school teacher and friend, Dayve Forman, has repeatedly said it
best. "Crime does pay. Getting caught is what doesn't pay." If you're
going to rob a video store, sell the tapes immediately. Dub them if you
must, but get rid of them, for God's sake! Don't keep the damned things
to
use in your own store. Man, that's dumb. "Thanks for shopping." "Come
again!"
