DVD is finally here for everyone
by: James Andrews
Creative Labs has announced that it will market a DVD package for $150. The kit, which
just includes the DVD drive, will be the first kit sold that just includes the drive and
not all the usual extras. This will be good news for people who already have video cards
that support the MPEG-2 standard. The company has also announced that it will offer
several upgrade solutions for its customers, which will allow them to choose the upgrade
that is most right for them.
DVD drives up till now have been a risky investment primarily for the changing
standards that it was going through. However, just recently the standards have been
decided upon and it is now safe to buy a DVD. The DVD disk, which holds 4.7 gigabytes of
information per side, will let consumers view high quality video, and play highly advanced
games. The DVD disk not only hold movies but can also hold alternet soundtracks,
non-english language versions, and extra trailers or info about the movie that you will
see. Scence the DVD is in a compact disk form, it will have the same advantages as the
laserdisk like being able to go instantly to any part of the movie that you wanted.
The home entertainment version of the DVD players is still relitivly
high cost which if the consumer had the right equipment for his home computer the single
DVD drive that Creative Labs is offering will help bring them into the home entertainment
area without costing an arm and a leg. Hopefully this kit will help bring the DVD
into mainstream market, which will make all the machines affordable. Long live DVD.
