The Clothesline Project
Bearing Witness to the Violence

"The Clothesline Project is an effort to raise awareness of violence against women. It is a visual testimony to the shattering effect of violence against women and the impact it has on society. Survivors of violence, friends, and families of victims have created shirts emblazoned with strong, direct messages."

The colors of the shirts have significant meaning:

White
for women who have died of violence

Yellow or Beige
for women who have been
battered or assaulted

Red, Pink, or Orange
for women who have been raped
or sexually assaulted

Blue or Green
for women survivors of incest
or child sexual abuse

Purple or Lavendar
for women attacked because of
their sexual orientation

Phrases from a few of the shirts:

Fuck you Uncle Danny

I did NOT like it
Kill My Daddy
Ricky, you asshole! How could you?
