Another thing that has changed is the windows explorer. If you type a web address into the drive address box the right pane of the explorer becomes Internet explorer. The opposite is true with Internet Explorer, if you type in "C:\" into the address bar, the contents of your c drive will appear in the window. You will also notice that the start menu has now a favorites menu that displays your favorites menu from Internet Explorer.

Internet Explorer also comes with the ability to view a lot of the new technology that is out there on the web. There is already some sites using the new web technology. Some of this technology will be used to deliver the latest new directly to your desktop. Most of the other technology is used to make web pages more exciting for the viewer. The site subscription service allows your browser to look up web pages that you specify and alerts you to let you know when they have changed.

Internet Explorer comes now with a new set of email programs that have been derived from the Outlook software that comes with Microsoft Office 97. These have a bunch of improvements over Internet Mail and News that came with Internet Explorer 3.01. You can now preview pictures that other people have sent you directly on the preview screen. The news program has a much better interface that allows easier mobility around newsgroups.

Over all it seems that Microsoft has a great product on the way out that will deliver a lot of new features to the old Internet browsers. A Macintosh version will be available in the future but without the shell extension. One of the only questions that remain now is when will the final version of Internet Explorer 4 will be released and how will it compare with the final version of Netscape Navigator 4.0 that currently is in beta too.
