Student Veterans Return to the Classrooms at RU

Rick AgostaMore than 6,000 miles and eight hours separate RU junior Rick Agosta from his friends and fellow students. While they're likely finishing up their classes for the day, the exercise, sport and health education major from Manassas is just a few hours short of reporting for his daily duty at FOB Kalsu military base south of Baghdad.

Agosta joined the Army in early 2003, completed basic and job training in December 2003 and enrolled at RU in the spring of 2004. He's on his second tour of duty in Iraq, and though he's had to start and stop his education a few times, Agosta remains focused and plans to hit the books again when he returns from duty in August. See RU News Release for more.

Student Veterans Return to the Classrooms at RU

Brandon RobinsonSeven years ago, Brandon Robinson served as an infantry medic in the U.S. Army. Today, he is a business management and marketing major at Radford University -- one of 138 students currently enrolled at RU who are certified with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

“My experiences matriculating back to the civilian world were somewhat difficult at first,” Robinson said. “But my classroom experience has only been aided by my time in the service. If I had gone straight into college, I would have failed to meet the standard. Now it means that much more.”

RU is working to expand special services for some of those veterans who are seeking to continue their education and transition from military to academic life. There are several services already available at RU for student veterans. See RU News Release for more.

This is a picture of a Mahkmour refugee camp in Iraqi Kurdistan. Capt. Kempen's mission was to accompany various U.N. organizations to locations all over northern Iraq to provide personnel security, medical evacuation, and quick reaction force support. "As you can see in the picture, the response to our visits was overwhelmingly positive in almost every case," writes Capt. Kempen. "I am currently stationed in Tikrit, Iraq, on a 15-month deployment with the 1st Armored Division Headquarters. We will be coming home to Wiesbaden, Germany, in December 08," he notes. "I appreciate you setting up this page, I think it is a great idea!"

RU Students Write From Guadalcanal
About Their Search for WWII Marine Remains

From July 6 - July 23, a team of Radford University faculty and students attempted to locate the remains of members of the U.S. Marine Goettge Patrol killed during the August 1942 Battle for Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. RU anthropologists Cliff and Donna Boyd, physicist Rhett Herman and RU students used archaeological techniques and geophysical equipment to survey the ground where the patrol was believed to be buried in mass graves. The trip was a part of RU's Forensic Science Institute field school in archaeology and geophysical survey at Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. Read about what the students found and experienced in Guadalcanal through their online journal.
