I was a little nervous at first about being a transfer student, but once I arrived at RU and saw all the friendly faces, I felt very welcome. I transferred to RU from a much larger institution, where I was just a face in the crowd, but at RU there was a sense of community from the beginning. The professors constantly offer their help, and I could tell from the beginning they wanted me to succeed. Classes here are fairly small, making it much easier to make friends. The professors in my major, chemistry, took an immediate interest in me and my career plans.  After I was here just one semester, one of my professors offered me the opportunity to collaborate with him on a research project for presentation at the American Chemical Society conference in Chicago.

I am now involved in a lot of other things at RU.  I am a peer instructor for the new freshman in chemistry, and I am also a lab assistant for a few chemistry labs. I’ve gotten to know all of the professors in chemistry, and even the ones I’ve never had in class recognize me by name. Coming to RU was the best choice I could have made.  I am confident that facing the academic challenges I have been given at RU has made me a stronger more independent person who will be well prepared for life after college, no matter what path I choose to take.

I looked at a couple of different universities before I transferred from Tidewater Community College in the fall of 2005.  I eventually made my choice based on Radford’s smaller size and the exciting things I read about my potential majors—Accounting/Finance and French—on the RU website.  Almost immediately after I arrived, I knew I made the right decision.

First, Club Fair at the beginning of the semester made it very easy to get involved in clubs and activities.  I joined the Institute of Management Accountants; this organization is great because we share valuable information about our career interests.  In addition, through IMA, I have met a lot of new friends.  Second, in contrast to larger schools, the professors at Radford really try to get to know the students personally and by name.  My name is not easy, but my professors still know who I am and greet me on campus!  They also make themselves available if I have questions or need extra help.  Finally, the relatively small size of Radford’s classes, especially those in my major, has made it very easy to make even more friends, because we are taking the same classes and studying the same material.  I have really enjoyed being part of Radford’s tight knit community.

Although I visited four-year universities during my junior year of high school, I decided to spend two years at a community college before transferring to a university.  When it came time to transfer, I decided to go to Radford University because the campus was beautiful, the size was neither too large nor too small, and the College of Information Technology is outstanding.  The actual process of transferring to Radford University was ten times easier than I expected.

The people at Radford were very welcoming; they did what they could to accommodate campus visits, help me make sense of any paper work that needed to be done, and answer all of my questions.  Once I arrived at RU, I found that fitting in was not a problem.  I am a member of Upsilon Pi Epsilon (the Computer Science Honorary) and a tutor for students in my college.  I also helped other students become comfortable at RU by serving as a Transfer Quest Assistant.  Radford University is the kind of place that encourages students to reach their full potential.

After beginning at a community college, I began my search for that “one” college or university to call home that had what I was looking for.  I wanted a university with great education programs to train teachers and a friendly place that made me feel welcome.  I found that and more at Radford University.  I fell in love with RU at an open house on a cold, rainy November day during which everyone treated me like a friend and all my questions were answered.

Once I moved to Radford I wanted to become as involved as I had been in high school and at my community college.  I quickly joined my residence hall council, helping plan programs and fundraisers that would bring my residence hall together. Eventually, I became President of the council.  I have also used my leadership skills in many other ways: I have served as a Transfer Quest Assistant, a Quest Assistant, a University 100 Peer Instructor, and a Resident Assistant.  I have recently been inducted into Kappa Delta Pi, the National Honor Society for Education.

As I look back, I feel fulfilled and honored to have contributed whatever I could to help the Radford Community the best it can be. Looking ahead, I am anxious to start my graduate application process and prepare for my future years at RU. In between, I find value in every day. As a first generation college student, I have seized the opportunity to learn, and I value the education that I have received at Radford University.  I look forward to using every aspect of what I have learned in my life to come.
