The classic Bible illuminated manuscript took several monks two years or more to produce. The cost of the plainest Bible was at least 1,000 guilders in 1450 in Venice. This would have been far more. When moveable type and printing spread from Germany, the cost of a plainly printed Bible came down to 1 guilder per book. |
