Turnitin

As of fall 2018, Turnitin Feedback Studio is available through D2L.  Turnitin is a suite of tools that promotes Academic Integrity by checking papers for Plagiarism, has tools for instructor to provide rich student feedback and also a Grammar Checker tool to enable students to be more successful.

This video talks about the variety of features available within Turnitin, also referred to as Feedback Studio.

Best Practices:

  • Enable Grammar Checker.
  • Allow students to see Similarity reports before due date so they can review their own feedback before submitting final assignment.
  • Set default NOT to store papers in standard repository until final submissions to avoid high Similarity Report results.
  • Inform students in your syllabus that you will be using this product as a resource. (*Syllabus suggestions below)

Syllabus Suggestions:  Whether using Turnitin as a teaching tool, a detection tool, or both, it is a good idea to have a statement in your syllabus informing students of your intent to use Turnitin in your course and how the results will be used in determining grades.  It is recommended to use Turnitin as a teaching tool and for students to check and improve their writing and citation efforts. The following is a suggested statement:

In this course, we will use Turnitin, an electronic resource that compares your written assignments to internet sources and a comprehensive database of other papers.  It creates an originality report identifying parts of your assignment that match any one of their sources (student paper repository, current and archived web site content, periodicals, journals and publications) and will be used as a teaching tool for learning to write with external sources.
