What's new in Student Activities?

At RU there is always plenty to do and then some. You will find a plethora of educational and fun-filled activities, approximately 160 student clubs or organizations to join, sporting events to cheer on the Highlanders and so much more. All this is planned to let you know that you are important to us and that we want you to consider RU your home-away-from-home.

So how do you find out about everything going on? One source is the Student Events Interactive Calendar. It is a great source that includes movies, theater, music performances, meetings, concerts, lectures, dances, novelty events, competitions, intramural's, sports clubs games, etc.

We encourage you to come and see for yourself how much we have to offer.

The LEAD Scholar Program
Radford University’s Student Leadership Program

Employers consistently rank leadership skills among the most important qualities they are seeking in employees.

Freshmen and other students who wish to enhance their leadership skills as they prepare to accept leadership positions at the University and in their communities should strongly consider becoming part of The LEAD Scholar Program (Leadership through Experience, Academics, and Development). We are currently recruiting students who will become the tenth LEAD cohort, to begin in spring 2010. To become a LEAD Scholar, students must complete a comprehensive leadership program consisting of three components: Experience, Academics, and Development.

The LEAD Scholar Program students will take LEAD 110: Emerging Leadership for three hours of credit in the spring and then complete their academic requirements by enrolling in nine additional hours of courses with leadership content before they graduate. The program is designed such that it is possible for LEAD 110 to be the only “add-on” course; i.e., the remaining academic requirements can be completed within the context of general education and the major. The LEAD Scholars are expected to participate in co-curricular leadership-focused programs and workshops and then use the skills they will have acquired in their classes and discussions in leadership positions they will assume—Resident Assistant, Orientation Assistant, UNIV 100 Peer Instructor, etc. Students who complete all program requirements have a notation about this accomplishment placed on their transcripts. (Students who have taken LEAD 110 and then opted not to complete the remainder of The LEAD Scholar Program requirements have found the LEAD 110 course to be an excellent elective. LEAD 110 does not fulfill any core curriculum requirement.)

Since LEAD 110 is both an introductory class and the first class students take in the LEAD Scholars Program, freshmen will have the first opportunity to register for the class during Phase I and Phase II of registration. Both sections of the class will be closed to non-freshmen until Phase III, when they will be open to all students until all seats are filled.

Students who are interested in learning more about The LEAD Scholar Program are encouraged to contact Heather Evans, Associate Director for Student Activities and Leadership, at hlsmart@radford.edu.

Best wishes for a great fall semester!
