1957 - Russia launches the first satellite into space - Sputnik.
The U.S. responds by forming the Advabced Research Projects Agency (ARPA).
ARPA was designed to give the U.S. a lead in using science and technology applicable to the military.
1968 - Larry Roberts wrote the first design plans for ARPANET.
Roberts was an MIT graduate who worked for a military contractor.
1969 - ARPANET (the Internet) - was designed in response to the cold war. This was the first network system used to send and protect information at different geographic locations between military bases using the (NCP) Network Control Protocol.
1971 - Under ARPANET Major Developments- The first e-mail system using the SNDMSG program, which initially only allowed someone to leave a message in the same PC.
Ray Tomlinson created the first FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program to allow the SNDMSG program to send messages across ARPANET.
1973 - Vinton Serf, who initially ARPANET'S (NCP) Network Control Protocol, improved the NCP by creating the (TCP/IP) Transfer Control Protocol over Internet Protocol.
1989-1991 - Tim Berners-Lee - Invented the World Wide Web and created the first GUI interface for end users.
Lee is currently the director of the World Wide Web Consortium.
He defined HTML (Hypertext Markup Language), HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol), and URLs (Universal Resource Locators).
