Q: Are there any course requirements to be in the SMIPO?A: No. There are no specific course requirements however, courses (both previous and current) will be considered by the selection committee when reviewing applications. Any related business and economics courses should be listed on your application. |
Q: Is this organization open to all majors?A: Yes. All majors are encouraged to apply as there are positions available in all fields of business (including information systems). Regardless of major, students should demonstrate an interest in investments (i.e. stocks, bonds, U.S. government securities) and portfolio management. |
Q: How much time will participating actually take?A: Participants are generally expected to dedicate 10+ HOURS PER WEEK outside of regular meeting times. |
Q: How much money is involved?A: SMIPO actively manages more than $300,000 dollars made possible through an endowment from the RU Foundation. |
Q: What role do faculty advisors play in organization?A: Faculty advisors will mentor and advise as needed. They are available for support, recommendations, feedback, etc. However, they do not have a vote in the investment making decisions or the operational decisions within the organization. This is a student run organization. |
Q: What type of process is involved when joining SMIPO?A: There are a few procedures that have to be followed upon becoming a member of SMIPO. One is you must fill out an application packet, which consists of a cover letter, resume’ and application form and then turn it in to Mrs. Brenda Ritter in Whitt 201 or mail it to P.O. Box 6951. Second, the SMIPO Selection Committee will review your application packet. You will then be contacted for the scheduling of a formal interview. |
Q: How are the general meetings conducted?A: We structure our meetings in a way so that they depict a real business environment. We do this by following a Parliamentary Procedure in order to keep a basic structure to our meetings. The general meetings are mandatory and are held every Tuesday and Thursday from 12:30 to 1:45. |
