Distinguished Professors Named

Three faculty have been honored as Ted R. and John N. Dalton Distinguished Professors. As of the fall semester, geology professor Chester “Skip” Watts, foreign languages and literatures professor Leonor Ulloa, and Grace Toney Edwards, director of the Appalachian Regional Studies Center, each received Distinguished Professor recognition. All are also past recipients of Outstanding Faculty Awards from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.

As an in-demand geology consultant, Watts shares his expertise with students, involving them in practical research projects with far-reaching impact. Students have been closely involved in Watts’ study of the 1996 Yosemite National Park rockslide, which has been televised twice on the Learning Channel.

Ulloa’s students say she transforms an ordinary classroom into a dynamic learning environment that engenders appreciation for diverse expressions of human culture. She particularly shares her extensive knowledge of Spanish language and culture.

Edwards is a recognized Appalachian scholar who inspires students with her passion and professionalism. Her knowledge and enthusiasm have infused many students with an informed appreciation for Appalachian heritage, history and tradition.

“RU’s academic environment is greatly enriched by the contributions of these dedicated faculty,” said vice president for Academic Affairs Ann Ferren. “Day by day, these outstanding scholars prove how deserving they are by giving their best. Each brings unique talents to the university that would be impossible to replace and each diligently applies those talents to the benefit of the entire RU community.”
