Class Information, Solutions page, etc.

  • The PHYS/GEOL 406 class information sheet that I handed out the first day of class.
  • The textbook for this class is the most widely-used book in the field of geophysics, "Introduction to Applied Geophysics Exploring the Shallow Subsurface" by H. Robert Burger, Craig H. Jones, and Anne F. Sheehan. There's a lot of information in this book but we will pick and choose since we only have one semester.
  • You need to get familiar with the National Geophysical Data Center and a few specific pages they maintain:
  • The "Field Geophysics Software Suite" for our class. Note: You might need to right-click on this link and choose "save as" in order to download this .zip file.

Homework:
  • homework #1: Due Friday, February 1 by 5:00:00pm
  • homework #2: Due Saturday, February 9 by 10:00am
  • homework #3: Do not turn this in since there is a test on this material (next week in the lab time). I will post my solutions so that you can check your own work.
  • homework #4: Due Saturday, February 23 by 11:00am
  • The SeisImager.msi installation file for the programs including PickWin (what I've been using in class). Right-click, save this .msi file, run it (be sure you're online) and it will go get the other files to install everything. Keep in mind that you only hvae 15 times running this in this "trial mode." However, you can use it 15 times on another computer, and 15 on another...

  • homework #5: Due Saturday, March 2 by 11:00am
  • homework #6: Do not turn this in since there is a test our next class week (week after spring break). I will post my solutions so that you can check your work.

  • Resistivity raw data and topography info: binary file, topo file, Excel topo file; dat file
  • homework #8: Due Saturday, March 30 by 12noon
  • Radford Civil War resistivity and elevation data. As usual, right-click and "save as" to put this on your computer. This will be due by 11:00am on Saturday, April 20.
  • homework #9: Do not turn these in since there is a test next week. I will post my solutions for these.
  • Magnetic data from Monday, April 8 geophysics lab. This is the raw binary file that opens in MagMap. Right-click and "save as" in an always-accessible location so you can work with this.
