The textbook for this class is the most widely-used book in the field of geophysics, "Introduction to Applied Geophysics Exploring the Shallow Subsurface" by H. Robert Burger, Craig H. Jones, and Anne F. Sheehan. There's a lot of information in this book but we will pick and choose since we only have one semester. You need to get familiar with the National Geophysical Data Center and a few specific pages they maintain: NGDC's Geomagnetism page which has things such as their Magnetic Field Calculators page where you can see all of the components to Earth's field (FEarth=μHEarth=JEarth=BEarth, to use the various notations for Earth's total field). Note: When you put in the location for a given magnetic field be sure to include elevation data! NGDC's Bathymetry and Global Relief page where you can get all sorts of topographic data. Right-click, save this .msi file, run it (be sure you're online) and it will go get the other files to install everything. Keep in mind that you only hvae 15 times running this in this "trial mode."
