RU Named a "Best in Southeast" University by Princeton Review

Radford University has again been named to the “best colleges and universities in the Southeast” list, according to The Princeton Review. “The validation of quality represented by this honor is something very important to our entire university community,” said Radford University President Penelope W. Kyle. “We offer a vast array of academic opportunity, and we do it in an environment that encourages student/faculty interaction and values teaching excellence. It’s gratifying to see this recognized by outside agencies.”

President Kyle at 2009 ConvocationRadford University President Penelope W. Kyle outlined a strong record of university achievement during the past academic year, discussed looming fiscal challenges, and encouraged the RU community to embrace unity in the face of adversity during the 2009 Fall Convocation. She also candidly discussed perceptions of organizational tension that have surfaced during a year fraught with budget problems and encouraged the community to rally around the Centennial as a catalyst for constructive change and progress.

Renovated Young Hall Opened

President Kyle Cuts Ribbon at Young HallRadford University opened doors to its newly renovated Young Hall, a learning facility that ranks among the top five most digitally advanced academic buildings in the United States, according to officials with Crestron, the primary technology contractor for the building. The RU community celebrated the completion of the $6.5 million renovations with a ribbon-cutting ceremony following President Penelope W. Kyle’s address at the annual fall convocation. Young Hall is fully equipped with technologically-sophisticated classrooms that will establish the facility as RU’s flagship classroom building.

RU Named U.S. News "Up-and-Coming" University

Radford University has been named one of the nation’s “Top Up-and-Coming Schools” in the U.S. News and World Report’s 2010 Guide to America’s Best Colleges. The designation recognizes colleges and universities that have recently made the most “promising and innovative changes” and are projected to soar higher in the rankings. “Our entire university community is elated by this recognition,” said Radford University President Penelope Kyle. “This achievement speaks so well of the talents and hard work of our faculty, staff and students.”

Scottish Rite Foundation Donates $15,000 to RU for RiteCare Clinic

President Kyle on Earth DayJames Cole, Scottish Rite Masons’ Sovereign Grand Inspector General in Virginia, presented RU President Penelope W. Kyle a check for $15,000 from the Scottish Rite Foundation Freemasonry and the Scottish Rite Foundation to support the RiteCare Clinic at RU. This is the 15th year that the Scottish Rite Freemasonry and Radford University have partnered to host the RiteCare Clinic.

Board of Visitors Lauds President Kyle, Approves New Contract

Praising her progressive leadership, the Radford University Board of Visitors finalized negotiations Thursday on a new contract for President Penelope W. Kyle that is designed to keep her at the university’s helm at least until 2013.

Gov. Kaine Challenges Graduates at RU Commencement

President Kyle and Gov. KaineStorm clouds brewed outside, but the inside of Dedmon Center was full of light as Virginia Governor Timothy M. Kaine joined Radford University to applaud its new graduates during Saturday’s Spring Commencement of the 96th session.Thunderstorms forced RU to move its university-wide commencement from Moffett Lawn to separate college ceremonies held inside Dedmon Center and Bondurant Auditorium in Preston Hall to confer the 1,476 undergraduate degrees. Another 310 graduate degrees were awarded Friday.

“I really am more optimistic about Virginia and our nation because of my interaction with college students,” Kaine said. College students today are more accepting of diversity, have a passion for public service, and show a resiliency unmatched by their elders, he noted. Following his remarks, Radford University Rector Thomas E. Fraim, Jr., ’87, and President Penelope W. Kyle awarded Kaine an honorary Doctor of Letters degree, noting his “distinguished service, outstanding leadership and impeccable character.”

BOV Sets Tuition, Supports Academic Program Review

The Radford University Board of Visitors approved on Thursday an in-state undergraduate tuition increase of five percent, or $209, to $4,396 for the 2009-10 academic year. “As much as we want to build for the future and fully fund new programs and initiatives to best prepare our students to venture forth into the workforce and the world, we must balance today’s economic climate and keep our tuition as low as possible to help Virginia’s struggling families,” said RU President Penelope W. Kyle.

Radford University Celebrates Earth Day

President Kyle on Earth DayOn Wednesday, the campus community gathered to celebrate Earth Day, an event observed globally each April 22. The RU festivities were sponsored by the CPC and coordinated by RU’s student-based Green Team. Faculty, staff, students and alumni gathered on Heth Lawn as RU’s sustainability coordinator Julio Stephens presented information about a variety of environmentally friendly campus initiatives, including a move-out recycling program called Ytoss. Also during the Earth Day celebration, student volunteers, along with President Penelope W. Kyle, planted a tree sapling in front of Russell Hall to commemorate the day.

President Kyle Appointed to Fulbright Canada Board of Directors

Radford University President Penelope W. Kyle has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Foundation for Educational Exchange Between Canada and the United States. The Foundation for Educational Exchange is a joint bi-national organization which administers the prestigious Canada-U.S. Fulbright program, and ancillary programs such as the Killam Fellowships, the Network on North American Studies in Canada and the Fulbright-Hays Seminar program. President Kyle will be joining a prestigious group of key leaders from universities, government and the private sector in both Canada and the United States.

Senator Warner Talks Economy, Shoots Hoops at RU

Senator Warner and President KyleDespite the economic crisis gripping the country, U.S. Senator Mark R. Warner encouraged nearly 250 Radford University business students on Tuesday to “stay in the fight” and insist that their elected officials take action to reform entitlement and defense spending, reduce the federal deficit and make meaningful investments in energy and healthcare. After the class, Warner put into action his basketball savvy, taking to the court inside the Dedmon Center for a pickup game with the Big South Conference championship RU men’s basketball team. RU President Penelope W. Kyle introduced the senator to the McGuffey Hall gathering of business students. She was a member of Warner’s administration when he was governor of Virginia.

RU Addresses Academic Program Review in Open Forum

Declaring a desire to make the academic program review process “an open and inclusive exchange of ideas and opinions,” President Penelope W. Kyle hosted her second public forum in a week for the Radford University community. For 90 minutes, a panel of 18 academic deans, directors, faculty and a student representative joined Provost Wil Stanton to field dozens of questions from several hundred students and faculty related to 29 academic programs that are currently under review.

RU Leaders Discuss Budget During Campus Forum

Radford University President Penelope W. Kyle and Provost Wil Stanton hosted a forum Thursday in Bondurant Auditorium to discuss the past, present and future budget plans for the university. The forum began at 3:30 p.m. and ended at 5:15 p.m., with approximately 35 questions being answered by Kyle; Stanton; Catherine Greenberg, vice president of University Advancement; Joey Sword, director of Human Resources; Eugene Carson, university registrar; and Lisa Ridpath, director of university budget.

RU Hosts Virginia's First Lady, Children's Services Forum

First Lady Holton and President KyleOn Tuesday, Virginia's First Lady Anne Holton visited campus to open the Transformation Kick-Off Forum, an event focused on the transformation of children's services. The forum, part of a larger series held throughout Virginia, highlights a goal to position the Commonwealth as a leader in improving the long-term outcomes for the state's at-risk youth.

RU Advocacy Day at General Assembly

Forty students, a group of faculty, Board of Visitors members and President Penelope W. Kyle took to the halls of the General Assembly Thursday to share the Radford University story with the Commonwealth’s legislators. Called RU Advocacy Day and spearheaded by the Radford University Student Government Association, the event gave the RU students – all volunteers – an opportunity to become familiar with Virginia’s legislative process and their respective delegates and senators who are gathered for the 2009 session.

Board of Visitors Grants Tenure to President

The Radford University Board of Visitors today approved another title to President Penelope W. Kyle’s expansive resume: Professor of Business Law. The faculty in the Department of Accounting, Finance and Business Law initiated the process, which was endorsed by the department chair as well as the dean of the College of Business and Economics. President Kyle has a Juris Doctorate from the University of Virginia School of Law and a Masters in Business Administration from the College of William and Mary.

Dedmon Center Renovations Near Completion

Dedmon Center RenovationsThe final steel truss completing the frame work of the Dedmon Center roof was lifted and placed last week, drawing closer the completion of renovations to the Radford University athletics center. Before the 20-ton steel beam ascended to the top of the Dedmon Center, President Penelope W. Kyle, RU Director of Athletics Robert Lineburg and each of the head and assistant athletics coaches signed the truss on Thursday. Each truss measures six feet in diameter and stands 14-feet tall.

Board of Visitors Hears of Successes

Radford University President Penelope W. Kyle reported to the Board of Visitors during its meeting Thursday that Radford University achieved all of its targets on State Council of Higher Education for Virginia’s Institutional Performance Standards, the only institution in the Commonwealth to do so. Targets measured include enrollment, affordability, degrees awarded, progression and retention rates and K-12 partnerships, among others. RU is ranked second in the state for degrees conferred per full-time faculty member.  “We are very proud of this accomplishment.  It is a testament to the strength and dedication of our faculty and staff,” says Kyle.

President Kyle Addresses Freshmen, ParentsPresident Penelope W. Kyle met with freshmen students and their parents Friday in a question-and-answer session in the Bonnie Hurlburt Student Center. Kyle and a group of RU administrators addressed numerous items including campus safety, student activities, campus and classroom involvement and campus construction.

Governor Kaine Gets RU Update During Campus Visit

President Kyle and Governor KaineVirginia Governor Timothy M. Kaine came to Radford University on Friday to learn about RU's efforts and accomplishments related to the 7-17 Strategic Plan and to tour the campus. Greeted by a standing room only crowd in the Martin Hall Board Room, Governor Kaine was welcomed to the campus by the Rector of RU's Board of Visitors, R.J. Kirk. The Rector noted Governor Kaine's strong commitment to higher education in the Commonwealth and thanked him for his continuing interest in the success of Radford University.
