ABOUT EXTENDED COVERAGE


Extended Coverage Monthy Rates (effective 07/01/06)

A spouse or dependent child who would ordinarily lose coverage because of any of the following Qualifying Events may elect to extend coverage under the State Health Benefits Program for a period of up to 36 months at his/her own expense without contribution from the State.

  1. Death of the State employee or retiree under whose membership the affected person was enrolled as a spouse or as a dependent child.

  2. Divorce from a State employee under whose membership the affected person was enrolled as a spouse or dependent child.

  3. Loss of dependent child status by a person enrolled in the State Health Benefits Program.

In addition, an employee who would ordinarily lose coverage because of either of the following Qualifying Events may elect to extend coverage under the State Health Benefits Program for a period of up to 18 months at his/her own expense and without State contribution.

  1. Voluntary or involuntary (except for gross misconduct) termination or lay-off.

  2. Reduction in work hours to less than full time.

Eligibility for Extended Coverage ends at the earliest of any of the following:

  1. Failure to make a premium payment when due.

  2. Coverage under any other group plan by virtue of employment or marriage.

  3. Eligibility for Medicare.

  4. Expiration of the 18 month, 36 month or other coverage period, whichever may be applicable.


If eligibility for Extended Coverage ends because of the expiration of the 18 month, 36 month or other term, the insured may convert to Non-Group coverage.

Premiums for Extended Coverage are 102% of the premiums for regular coverage. Persons enrolled in Extended Coverage may participate in the annual Open Enrollment.
