Hurricane Ike
September 16, 2008 at 11:39 pm | In Uncategorized | No Comments | Edit this postIt’s hurricane season, and once again we see a storm that blasts the Gulf Coast wreaking havoc over another prominent Gulf city, Galveston, Texas. For days there were countless amounts of video footage showing the water crashing into the Galveston beach wall. People knew of this storm nearly a week before hit, and they were told to evacuate. Hurricane Ike just kept collecting water in the Gulf of Mexico as it made its way on to shore. You could tell this storm was going to be bad as it was tearing away the beach wall while still being a day away from reachin land. All of this known information about Hurricane Ike, and still people decided to stay behind. This begs the question of why you would ever decide to do such a thing. You know of the impending doom about to reach your city, and you are told to evacuate. Do people believe there home will be safer if they stay to protect it. This isn’t a burglar, it’s a hurricane. If you decide to stay you will be hurt. What happens to your house will happen whether you are there to see it or not. Board up your home, and get the heck out of dodge. Please do not add to the damage and confusion, be responsible for the well being of your family and leave when you see a storm bearing disaster on the horizon.
Election Aftermath
November 19, 2008 at 3:11 pm | In Uncategorized | No Comments | Edit this postAfter the presidential election results were fanlly in at all hours of the morning, questions about the president elect immediately come to mind. will he do a good job, what does this election say about america, and will he be a good president. There were several people, here at Radford University, that were excited about the change in the White House, and others that just aren’t convinced that the right decision was made just yet. One student I talked to, Daniel Mozer, was excited but couldn’t quite put his finer on why. Possible reasons he gave were being more happy to see the Republicans out of the White House after President Bush. it definatley felt as though that could have been the driving force for his vote for Obama, rather than his policies. Another student I spoke with, Jeff Lukas, supported McCain and was very disappointed with the results. Lukas is willing move on and put his support in the new President, and not have any grudges going into Obama’s first term. Whatever the outcome of a presidential election, I think we should all take a page out Jeff’s book. So your candidate lost get over it, put your faith in the new President and hope for a solid eight years.
Election Day
November 4, 2008 at 10:23 pm | In Uncategorized | No Comments | Edit this postWhat has summed up everything today was hearing that it was, ” Like the Super Bowl of all elections,” from Tracy Howard here at the Radford City Registrar. Needless to say that we have never seen anything like this in past presidential elections. Turnout is near ridiculous numbers even for a small city like Radford. while doing an interview with the Radford City Registrar, I came to the conclusion that today may be the busiest day in American history. Bigger than any sports event. Bigger than a bunch of hooligans going crazy while shopping for their son or daughters favorite Christmas toy on black Friday. Today has that feel. every is trying to make their vote count so the evil forces won’t win. party politics are being seen at great lengths. I ran in to a women outside the local Mccain headquarters trying to sway people driving by holding up a sign. I beleive we are seeing the record turnout because America essentially is a nation divided. You are either conservative or liberal. It has gotten so ugly that people vote seem to vote more out of spite for the opposing party candidate over anything else. What ever gets you to the polls vote for someone and what they stand for, and not against someone else. I will not be voting in this election as I did not receive my absentee ballot in a timely manner. In the words of George Carlin, those who don’t vote can complain all they want. If you vote and the persson you voted for wins, then you can’t complain about his policy becasue you put him there. I take great pride that I can omplain all I want about who ever wins because I did not support them. call me Mr. Neutral, who can hate or like anything the next president does or doesnt do
Tim Saunders WDBJ
October 27, 2008 at 12:53 am | In Uncategorized | No Comments | Edit this postIn my journalism portfolio class, we had Tim Saunders come in and talk to us about broadcast journalism and his job with the local CBS affiliate WDBJ 7. Saunders was a graduate of Radford University and has worked his way to on air news packages for WDBJ 7 out of Roanoke, Va. It was interesting to find out that Tim’s view of being a broadcast journalist, because he has already finished the process that I am currently still going through. For the most part Tim does everything for the story but shoot it. His way of catergorizing this story was calling it a one man band story. This means that Tim does all of the research for story, sets up the interviews, and writes the story, while his photographer shoots it. His main piece of advice he had for us aspiring journalists was that you are going to have to work hard to get ahead in the journalism business. Everyone has this idea they are a pretty face and can talk, so they would be good at telling the news. The big anchor jobs in journalsim aren’t the only thing to do. If you are going to get to that point you are going to have to put your time in. Tim said that a starting journalist doesn’t make that much money, but if you put the time and effort into your stories you will be successful as a journalist. Sometime the biggest maarkets aren’t always the best because they are so competitive. The smaller news markets usually are going to be a better place to start.
