Students will present each of their five "ideal" job descriptions and lead a discussion on:

  1. Self-Employed (Own Boss)
    • I chose this job because it offers plenty of flexibility after the initial startup, and the rate of the business growth depends on the amount of work that is put into it.
    • Some of the challenges that go along with this particular job are that first, every decision that a business owner makes regarding the startup business and thereafter affect every aspect of the business. Also budgeting for the business could be a challange in itself since, especially during these time, financing for businesses is not always readily available.
    • Starting your own business and being your own boss, if done right, can be very rewarding, but the main strategy that has to be used in order to be succesful is PLENTY of research.
    • One of the biggest mistakes that people starting their own business make is that they try to turn a hobby into a living without incorporating all the overhead costs and maintaining an emergency fund.
  2. Business intelligence analyst
    • I chose this job because it incorporated many aspects of running a succesfull business from both, the business side and the IT side. It also offers many problem solving opportunities and allows you to work with other teams within the company to solve complex IT problems and minimize human error through technology innovation.
    • Some of the challenges that are involved in obtaining this job are that it requires Recurrent Training not only in what was learned in College, but also you will need to keep up with the growing trends in technology which changes at a tremendous rate.
    • Some strategies to obtain this job are that you have to be willing to work in groups and also willing to learn new things every single day.
    • In order to excel in this particular job, one must be willing to solve problems that are presented to him/her in a rather quick and accurate manner.
  3. Multimedia Developer
    • I chose this job because it brings many aspects in the IT industry together, From Technical Experience all the way to Creativity. In this particular job, individuals are given the freedom to develop multimedia application for either end-users or lareg enterprises.
    • Some of the challenges that are involved in obtaining this job are first, to be able to meet tight deadlines for projects and also to organize workflow in a way that is most effective for your team/company on a certain project.
    • Some strategies that will set you apart from the competition in this particular field are:
      • How your portfolio is organized and its contents
      • The level of creativity that is apparent in your work.
      • Your ability to work in large teams and hear other peoples' ideas
      • Your ability to think outside of the box.
    • This job has many opportunities for students to excel since they are judged on the quality of work demonstrate.
  4. Media Planner/Strategist
    • I chose this job because it allows an individual to be able to explore the wide range of Media Studies while still giving them flexibility to concentrate on a certain area. It is also extremely fast paced and the room for advancement is extremely wide.
    • Some of the challenges involved in obtaining this job are that indivduals must be willing to relocate constantly due to the job being highly dynamic.
    • Some strategies that could be used to obtain this job are
      • Obtaining experience in the field of Media Studies prior to applying to this job in order to be set apart from other applicants.
    • In order to excel at this job, he/she would have to be willing and able to work in a fast paced environment that is constantly changing, and they have to be able to adapt to the changes rather quickly in order to stay on task and meet deadlines.
  5. Media Studies/Technology Professor
    • I chose this job because it allows an individual to stay within a certain field and through teaching it, be able to keep up with emerging technologies and share them with students.
    • One challenge in this particular field is that it requires a lot of training, and it could range from going all the way to get a PhD to yourself taking classes and Recurrent Training in order to pass those on to your students.
    • Some strategies that could be used to obtain this job are to excel and teach something that not too many people are particularly looking to each in order to set yourself apart from everybody else.
