Campus Master Plan - MP-07

Each State Agency which possesses state-owned real property must have and maintain a Master Plan for each site.  The Master Plan is intended to depict current and future land use and guide future growth of Radford University’s physical plant in a planned and orderly fashion responding to future needs.  The Master Plan drawings are intended to depict the current and proposed land use and development of the campus/physical plant as stated in the agency’s ten year plan.  Future building sites and proposed construction shall be indicated as derived through the information obtained during the planning study and from Radford University’s long-range plans and program guidance.  The Master Plan shall be prepared in accordance with Chapter 13 of the Construction and Professional Services Manual.

Established by the General Assembly as the State Normal and Industrial School for Women in 1910, the university has been in continuous session since its 1913 opening.  The university became Radford State Teachers College in 1924, in 1972, after almost 60 years as an all-women’s college, Radford became coeducational and in 1979 was granted university status by the General Assembly.  Today, Radford University is a coeducational, comprehensive institution with undergraduate and graduate programs. 

The university is located 36 miles southwest of Roanoke in the New River Valley, close to the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.  The campus is approximately 3-1/2 hours from Richmond and 4-1/2 hours from Washington, DC and the Tidewater region by car.  Radford University is accessible by Interstate 81 and U.S Route 11.

The campus consists of 68 buildings, including 15 dormitories and 16 classroom buildings.  The university has a highly diverse curriculum for undergraduates and selected graduate programs offering 140 undergraduate and graduate programs through the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business and Economics, Education and Human Development, Health and Human Services, Information Science and Technology, Visual and Performing Arts and the College of Graduate and Extended Education.  These programs provide advanced and specialized courses of study, supervised practicum experiences, and opportunities for research.
