SAFETY ORIENTATION
Scope: This class is designed to familiarize new employees with the Safety Program at the university, promote safety awareness and encourage safe work practices.
Overview: The goal of the Safety Program is to reduce occupational injuries and illnesses by reducing accidents and controlling hazards. New employees have a higher rate of accidents and injuries than more experienced workers, usually because they lack adequate safety information. Nationally, 40% of workers injured have been on the job less than one year. For fiscal year 2000, 49% of reportable injuries occurred to workers who had been at the university for less than a year. To reduce accidents it is important to impress upon new employees that the university is concerned about their health and safety. Safety Orientation can set the tone for a new employee's safety attitude and behavior, and provide essential information to prevent accidents.
