SAFETY TRAINING
2009
Ensuring that employees and students are adequately trained in health and safety principles is an important function of the Safety Office. The Safety Office is responsible for developing training programs for employees and works with professors to ensure that students receive proper safety training. Several safety training programs are OSHA mandated such as Hazard Communication, Bloodborne Pathogens, Respiratory Protection, Hearing Protection, Lockout/Tagout, Confined Space, and Laboratory Safety. In addition, the Safety Office conducts training sessions in general safety topics such as CPR/first aid, heat stress, office safety, slips and falls, and back safety. Training should be conducted when a new employee is hired or transferred to a new job, when new equipment is installed, a new task is assigned, or any time a lack of employee knowledge may create a hazardous condition. Supervisors are responsible for ensuring that their employees receive the proper training. Training classes are conducted in the training room in Facilities Management and usually take 60 minutes. Under OSHA, full time, wage, and student workers are considered employees. Registration for classes, except CPR/First Aid/AED, is not necessary.
