BACK SAFETY

 

Scope:  This class is designed for all employees at the university. The class is mandatory for maintenance, housekeeping and dining services employees.

Overview:  Back injuries are a major problem in the workplace in terms of cost and lost productivity. Hundreds of thousands of workplace injuries occur each year costing billions of dollars. Back injuries comprise 25% of all workers compensation claims and can cause mild to severe pain, lost time, expenses, inconvenience, disability, and changes in life style. Most back injuries are due to unsafe acts by workers and can be prevented by following some basic guidelines. This class will discuss proper lifting techniques, exercises to keep the back in shape, and job designs that can lessen the load on the back. On-line training is available.
