SAFETY COMMITTE MEETING MINUTES

May 19, 2010

The RU Safety Steering Team meet Wednesday, May 19, 2010 in the Planning and Construction Conference Room in the Dave Armstrong Complex at 9am till 10 am.

Present: Addis Ainsley, Beth Johnson, Larry Brown, Adrean Harris, and Larry Ashby

Absent:Todd Branscome, John Crocker, Dianne Clark, Jeff Orzolek, Don Barnes, Eric Vest and Swateja Nimkar

1. Assignments:

• Scribe: Addis Ainsley
• Time keeper: Larry Ashby

2. Introduction: Addis Ainsley discussed the low turnout of this quarters meeting. Addis will send out a reminder the day before the meeting for future meetings.

3. Check on previous meeting action items:

• Addis Ainsley will send out minutes, meeting notice, and agenda for next meeting. Complete
• Swateja Nimkar will notify Addis Ainsley on the next SHAC meeting. On Going
• Swateja Nimkar will add a note on the student portal the importance of students reporting all accidents. Complete
• Dianne Clark will ask to have a message added to the Dean's desk news letter about turning in all accidents and safety concerns. Complete
• Dianne Clark will discuss with RUPD a possible "Open House" for the Police, Safety, Emergency Planning and Chemistry department. On Going
  • Larry Brown said he will take on this task now.
• Larry Brown will bring a list of Student injuries from EMS since last July. Complete

4. FY2010 work related accident trends: It was noted that the Facilities department had 34 of the 61 work related injuries on campus so far for FY2010 and 24 of them were from Housekeeping. Since there was no representation from the Facilities department in the Safety Steering Team meeting, Addis will discuss these findings with Jorge Coartney.

5. 12 month rolling EMS calls: Larry Brown shared with the team some statistics from RU EMS calls. There has been, in the past 12 months, 146 EMS calls with 80% of them involving treatment or transferred care. Addis Ainsley has the report and will try and disseminate the information before the next meeting. Dinning services reported that Ergonomics (lifting injuries) was there number one type of injury.

6. Action Items.

• Addis Ainsley will send out minutes, meeting notice, reminder, and agenda for next meeting.
• Swateja Nimkar will notify Addis Ainsley on the next SHAC meeting.
• Larry Brown will schedule an "Open House" for the Police, Safety, Emergency Planning at the Chemistry department.
• Addis Ainsley will evaluate the safety of the stairs behind the HR building.

7. Next Meeting: Will be August 18th at 9am till 10am in the Planning and Construction Conference Room in the Dave Armstrong Complex
