Radford Outdoor Augmented Reality (ROAR) Project
Presenters: Daniel Burgess, Scott McGregor, Jason Armstrong
This presentation will explain how augmented reality (AR) games and mobile technology can be used to teach and learn in the classrooms of tomorrow. As the students move around a physical location, such as their school playground or sports fields, a map on their handheld displays digital objects and virtual people who exist in an AR world superimposed on real space. When students come within approximately 10 feet of these digital artifacts, the AR and GPS software triggers video, audio, and text files, which provide narrative, navigation and collaboration cues as well as academic challenges. The cyber-enabled learning made possible by location-aware AR expands the current understanding of classroom boundaries by embedding the physical environment outside of school with digital scientific inquiry challenges.

1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
“The Role of HIRA in Arabidopsis Development”
Presenters:  Dr. Tara Phelps-Durr/Emily Williamson
HIRA is a protein that is found in a wide variety of organisms, including humans. When HIRA is mutated, severe developmental defects occur that often result in embryo lethality. Our research focuses on how the chromatin remodeling protein HIRA regulates gene expression during plant development. One goal is to determine the similarities and differences of HIRA function in plant and animal development.

2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
“Nadine Gordimer”
