
The Boiler Plant provides a constant flow of steam to all areas of campus on a 24-hour, 7-days a week basis. The plant maintains three 50,000 lb. per hour, one 14,000 lb. per hour and a 6,800 lb. per hour boilers. Each boiler has the capability of burning natural gas or # 2 fuel oil. Steam is used on campus to heat buildings and domestic water. It is also used in the dining facilities to cook food and wash dishes. Laboratories use the steam at lab stations, autoclaves and other appliances.
Six personnel provide maintenance and operation of the boilers and equipment. They work on a rotating basis, 24-hours a day, 7-days a week. They are responsible for the maintenance of the building, surrounding grounds and the steam tunnel system.
The plant falls under the polution controls established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and fully meet all the requirments. Boilers and pressure vessels are inspected and tested by Facilities Management and the insurance carrier to ensure safety and compliance with state and federal regulations.
