Radford University has implemented many energy conservation measures over the years. Some of these measures are listed below.
Replace Lamps and Ballast
Upgrade lighting to energy efficient lamps and electronic ballast.
Occupancy Sensors
Infared and ultrasonic sensors are used to turn lights off after a set period of time.
Free Cooling
Use of cooling towers and plate heat exchangers to provide cooling without running mechanical cooling equipment.
Ice Storage
Use of ice storage system to use ice for cooling instead of running mechanical cooling equipment
Economizer
Uses outside air for cooling instead of running mechanical cooling equipment.
Steam Driven Condensate Pumps
Uses steam to drive a condensate return pump instead of electricity.
Carbon Dioxide Sensors
Uses CO2 sensors to control the amount of outside air entering a building.
Variable Frequency Drives
Used where motors vary in speed to control pumps, etc. Varying the speed saves electricity.
Improve Insulation
Improve and increase insulation in buildings,on circulating lines and steam lines.
Replace Windows
Replace windows with energy efficient thermopane glass.
Heat Reclaim
Capture heat in exhaust air and transferthe heat back in the space.
Hot Water Reset
Control the temperature of heating water determined by outside air temperature.
Chiller Reset
Control the temperature of cooling water determines by outside air temperature.
Energy Efficient Motors
Replace electric motors with energy efficient motors.
