How to Talk to Faculty

  • Make an appointment to talk with faculty during his/her office hours as soon as possible.
    • Usually the faculty's phone number, office hours schedule, and office location is listed on the course syllabus (outline of class for the semester).
    • If phone number, office hours, office location are unavailable, check with the department's secretary for this information.

*If office hours conflict with your class schedule, talk to your faculty member. Faculty will arrange an alternative time to meet. Please be aware that faculty have responsibilities and other commitments; therefore, before and after class is not always the best time to try to talk to a faculty member. It is better to schedule an appointment so there will be enough time to talk with your faculty member.

  • Write out questions or issues to discuss about your academic accommodations. You may have questions such as:
    • How do I arrange for extra time for my tests?
    • How do I find a separate, quiet classroom to take tests in?
    • Do you have notes available to students through the Internet or on reserve in the McConnell Library?
    • Are there other resources available (library articles, study groups, old exams, special events, etc.) to help me understand the material being covered in this class?

*Be prepared to explain how you learn best to faculty. If you are not sure how to answer this, set up an appointment to talk to the DRO beforehand about learning styles and strategies.

**If you are still not sure how to talk to a faculty member or explain your particular situation, make an appointment with the DRO. We can help you to feel comfortable talking with faculty.
