RU researchers featured as nursing honor society rising stars
Two members of Radford University's Epsilon Psi chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) were featured as Rising Stars of Scholarship and Research presenters at the nursing honor society's recent 42nd Biennial Convention.
Katie Katz, Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) '13 and instructor of nursing, and Marjorie Young, a current DNP student and director of Women's Health Services at LewisGale Hospital Montgomery, were among 81 international presenters in the peer-reviewed, invitational category.
Katz's presentation was titled "Continuing Education for Advanced Practice Nurses: Palliative Care and End-of-Life."
Young presented research titled "Changing Knowledge and Attitudes Concerning Maternity Care Practices Consistent with the Baby-Friendly Hospital."
“Katie and Marjorie are recognized as exemplary researchers and scholars,” said Vicki Bierman, assistant professor of nursing and Epsilon Psi chapter president. “Their research contributes important and original evidence-based knowledge to the field of nursing and patient care."
STTI is an honorary society with more than 130,000 active members and 490 chapters and 85 countries devoted to learning, knowledge and professional development for nurses and improved global health. Bierman, Katz and Young joined more than 2,000 members to mark STTI's 90th anniversary in Indianapolis.

“The DAISY Faculty Award was established by the DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died at 33 of ITP, an auto-immune disease. The Barnes Family was awestruck by the clinical skills, caring and compassion of the nurses who cared for Patrick. They created this national award to demonstrate appreciation to faculty for their commitment and inspirational influence on their nursing students and to say thank you to nursing faculty everywhere.”
Kate, nominated by her peers, impressed both her students and fellow faculty members with her dedication to teaching and the future of nursing.
