Suspecting an Honor Code Violation

What to do if you suspect an Honor Code violation

If you suspect an Honor Code violation, as a student, you have several options. You are encouraged to talk with the instructor of the class. Tell them what you saw, how you saw it, and why you think a violation occurred. You can ask that the faculty member not reveal to the suspected student that you witnessed the alleged violation. You may be asked to serve as a witness at a conduct hearing, but you can not be forced to do so.

Another option would be to talk with the student suspected of the violation. You can ask that they:

  • Not do it again, and if they do, you will turn them in
  • Self report that they violated the Honor Code
  • Try and understand why you are upset that they did this

A final option would be talk with someone from the Dean of Students office. A staff member can walk you through what happened and give you advice on what you should do next.
