IRBNet How To's

1. How to Create an ACcount in IRBNet

We have provided a brief tutorial along with screenshots to help you register with IRBNet, including creating a new username and password for your IRBNet account.

Your RU credentials won't automatically work in IRBNet and aren't recommended for use in IRBNet because an outside organization will then have access to them.

2. How to ViEW IRBNet USer Tutorial Videos (RECOMMENDED)

We highly recommend reviewing IRBNet's two brief and very helpful tutorial videos before using the submission system. Both tutorials offer extensive information about navigating the IRBNet submission system.

The first video walks the user through the five steps of submitting a protocol.  The second video demonstrates the IRBNet messaging structure, how to update project documents, and how to submit an amendment or continuation.

To access the tutorials, please open the below instructions for access to the URL, username, and password to IRBNet's training resource site:

3. How to Create and Submit a new IRB Submission (Project) in IRBNet

We highly recommend that you view the IRBNet User videos, especially video #1 if you are a new user to IRBNet.  Please see How-to #2 above.

Once you have created an account in IRBNet (use the menu items in the lefthand menu to guide you for most of the steps below):

  1. Select "Create New Project" from the upper left hand portion of the IRBNet screen.  Follow the prompts to properly set up your brand new application.

  2. Download blank forms as needed from the Designer Page.  At minimum, this includes the Initial Application and the Investigator Agreement forms.

  3. Upload completed forms via the Designer Page, including the above forms, any other relevant forms, and research team member CVs/Resumes.

  4. Share the Project with colleagues and faculty mentors, as needed.

  5. Sign the Project (PI signature is required).

  6. *Submit the Project.

When you have completed uploading all of your documentation and have shared the project with the members of your research team as appropriate, please remember to click on "Submit this Project".

Only by doing so will your project actually be submitted, the IRB Office notified of the new submission, and that it is ready for processing.

*If you don't click on Submit, we'll never know there is a protocol waiting to be processed.  But if you click on Submit too soon, you will be locked out of your project and unable to upload any subsequent documents.

4. How to Submit an Amendment PACKAGE to your IRB PRotocol

Amendments are to be submitted using the Amendment form and uploaded as a separate IRBNet package within your original submission (or "Project", as it is called in IRBNet).

  1. Go to IRBNet, select My Projects, and select the protocol that you wish to amend/modify.

  2. Select "Project History" from the left hand menu to find the "Create New Package" button and to view any other packages (other continuations or amendments, usually) within a Project (IRBNet's name for your original submission).

  3. Select "Create New Package".

  4. Download and complete the "Request for Modification" form from either "Step 1" on the Designer Page or from the Forms and Templates Library in IRBNet.

  5. Upload the completed "Request for Modification" form and any additional supporting documentation as needed.

  6. Sign and Submit the Package as usual from the lefthand menu options.

  7. The new package or "sub-package" will now have a "-2" (or higher) at the end of the 6-digit IRBNet ID to denote that this is a new submission package within your overall project.

  8. An Approval Letter will be sent after it has been successfully processed by the IRB Office.

5. How to Submit a Continuation Package for Your IRB Protocol

Continuations are to be submitted using the Continuation form and uploaded as a separate IRBNet package within your original submission (or "Project", as it is called in IRBNet).

  1. Go to IRBNet, select My Projects, and select your desired protocol.

  2. Select Project History from the left hand menu to find and select the "Create New Package" button.

  3. The new package or "sub-package" will now have a "-2" (or higher if there have been other packages created before this) at the end of the IRBNet ID to denote this new submission package within your overall project.

  4. Upload your documents, then sign, and submit the new package as usual.

  5. An Approval Letter will be sent after it has been processed by the IRB Office.

6. How to submit a Closure PackAge for your IRB Protocol

Closures are to be submitted using the Closure form and uploaded as a separate IRBNet package within your original submission (or "Project", as it is called in IRBNet).

  5. An Acknowledgement Letter will be sent to the PI when the study is closed in IRBNet.
