V.    Course Description:     

This course develops the knowledge base needed to provide patient-centered care in high acuity settings. Students apply the nursing process to clients in complex healthcare situations. Concepts of illness, disease management, and pharmacology are integrated.

VI.    Course Objectives:  

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Synthesize current knowledge from nursing science, the humanities, and social and natural sciences in fulfilling the role of the nurse as provider of care for individuals, families, and communities throughout the lifespan.  (PO 1,4)
  2. Examine selected health problems to include pathophysiology, growth and development, signs and symptoms, treatment, pharmacology, complications, and prognosis. (PO 1,2,4)
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship of genetics and genomics to the care and treatment of adults. (PO 1,4)
  4. Provide patient-centered care for individuals with selected complex conditions. (PO 1,3,4)
  5. Incorporate evidence-based practice in planning care for individuals and families in critical care and emergency care settings. (PO 1,2)
  6. Model ethical, caring, and culturally competent behaviors in the delivery of patient-centered care. (PO 1)
  7. Formulate plans of care that incorporate an interprofessional approach. (PO 6)
  8. Describe the nurses’ responsibilities in emergency preparedness and during a bioterrorism incident. (PO 1,3,4,5)
