NURS 897: Independent Practicum

Prerequisite:  Graduate standing in the DNP with completion of a minimum of one advanced clinical course in the student’s program of study and permission of the supervising faculty and advisor

Credit Hours:  (1-3)   

This course is designed to provide experience for the graduate student who elects to pursue additional advanced practice in a selected area. The content of the practicum will be defined by the student in consultation with the faculty member supervising the practicum.

 

Detailed Description of Content of the Course

This course is designed primarily for students who wish to develop further clinical expertise. The content of this practicum will be defined by the student in consultation with the faculty member supervising the practicum. Identification of a preceptor and clinical site are required. 

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

The focus is on developing clinical expertise.   Students will implement knowledge and skills gained in courses they have previously completed while expanding their knowledge base and further developing expertise in the use of those skills.

 

Goals and Objectives of this Course

The goal of the course is to provide the student with an additional opportunity to develop clinical judgment and expertise in an area of nursing practice. Students will develop individualized goals and objectives for the practicum with their faculty supervisor.

 

Assessment Measures

Assessment measures will include but are not limited to performance evaluations by faculty/preceptor based upon clinical competencies designated by the practice specialty, clinical logs, case analyses, and other written work reflecting the synthesis of knowledge in advanced nursing practice.

 

Other Course Information

Each credit hour requires 45 hours of clinical experience.
