NURS 470: Professional Role Transitions

Prerequisites: NURS 332 and NURS 365

Credit Hours: (3)

This course is the culmination of the RN-BSN coursework at Radford University with reflection of student professional and academic growth through a final project and professional portfolio. The student will build on content from previous courses on Nursing theory, research, and leadership to identify an area of personal interest for practice or research, define a project, see the project through to completion, and write a scholarly paper describing the conclusions from the project. The students will also build a portfolio based on professional and academic experiencs and future goals.


Detailed Description of Course

The objectives and content of this RN-BSN course are derived from the School of Nursing's philosophy and conceptual framework, and facilitate achievement of the School's program objectives as well as the Essentials of Baccalaureate Education (AACN). Additionally, the major topics and skills covered in this course  are common to most Theorist professional texts. Current research and advancement in theory and clinical practice also determine content.


Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Learning activities may include but not limited to assigned readings, lecture/discussion, case studies, group work, adn written assignments.


Student Goals and Objectives of the Course

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
1) Describe, practice, and research issues that impact Nursing
2) Identify a research or practice interest that relates to the Nursing role
3) Review current literature to develop a research question or project purpose
4) Utilize Nursing theory to frame a practice or research project
5) Outline the steps for a practice or research project
6) Successfully complete a practice or research project
7) Preapre a scholarly paper describing the practice or research project from conception to completion
8) Descrbie future educational and professional goals
9) Contextualize present and past academic and professional experiences as a guide for future growth and goal attainment
10) Prepare a portfolio that reflects academic and professional growth and progression towardsa educational and professional goals

Assessment Measures

Completion of professional portfolio and other course assignments as designated by faculty. The course grade is determined by an evaluation of the degree to which the student meets the stated course objectives in theory. Students must earn a minimum of a 80% "C" grade to pass.
