1. Catalog Entry

BIOL 472 (CHEM 472)
Biochemistry II

Credit hours (3)
Prerequisites: CHEM 471 or BIOL 471

This course will introduce students to bioenergetics and cellular metabolism, with a particular focus on human metabolism.

2. Detailed Description of Course

An outline of the topics covered:
    1) Principles of bioenergetics
    2) Carbohydrate metabolism
    3) Citric acid cycle
    4) Oxidative phosphorylation and photophosphorylation
    5) Lipid metabolism
    6) Protein metabolism
    7) Hormonal control of metabolism
    8) Role of vitamins and minerals in metabolism

3. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

BIOL 472 is a lecture course with students encouraged to participate with comments and questions. The course uses a standard biochemistry textbook that the students are expected to use to guide the study of each of the topics covered.  The student’s understanding of the lecture material will be evaluated using exams (including a cumulative final exam), and assignments such as homework, in-class assignments, and/or quizzes.

4. Goals and Objectives of the Course

    1) Demonstrate proficiency in the topics listed above
    2) Communicate biochemical concepts clearly and accurately

5. Assessment Measures

The students are graded on exams (including a cumulative final exam) and assignments, such as homework, in-class assignments, and/or quizzes, tests.

6. Other Course Information

The students in Biochemistry at Radford University are mainly Chemistry and Biology students and the course is designed to meet their needs and interests to the greatest extent possible.  It is felt, however, that the course can also be of value to any other students, particularly those training for health-related fields, who might have an interest in the molecular basis of life and the necessary background to participate.
