ACTG 511:Fundamentals of Accounting

This course provides an integrated study of introductory financial and managerial accounting. This course may not be taken for an elective in the MBA program.
Detailed Description of Content of Course
This course covers the essentials of financial and managerial accounting. Specifically, the course is organized to cover the following topics:
· Business Functions
· Basic Financial Statements
· Management Cycle
· Operating Processes
· Cost Behavior Patterns
· Cost-Volume-Profit Analysis
· Budgeting
· Accounting Cycle
· Resource Acquisition
· Accounting for Manufacturing Costs
· Financing – Debt and Equity
· Investment in Long-Term Assets
· Income Statement
· Statement of Financial Position
· Statement of Cash Flows
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
This course will be offered over the Internet utilizing Web CT or current university approved Web platform. Chapter outlines are presented, organizing the textual coverage in related modules. Problems are suggested for each assignment, selected to facilitate work on the important topics of each chapter. Solutions will be provided for these problems, on a timely window of opportunity. An exam, five in total, will be required for each module. The exams will be scheduled, or on an as ready, basis, depending on how and when the class is offered.
Goals and Objectives of the Course
Cover financial and managerial accounting topics, normally covered in 2 semesters of introductory accounting. Develop analytical skills of students in business and accounting context.
Expose students to GAAP and managerial internal accounting topics, distinguishing the two purposes, yet articulating the importance of both.
Assessment Measures
Students will be evaluated on the basis of their scores on the five exams.
Other Course Information
This is a completely on-line course: therefore, a student can complete the course requirements without physical presence on RU campus.
