PSYC 591. Selected Topics in Psychology
Three hour lecture (3).
Prerequisites: Graduate students, senior psychology majors or permission of the instructor
Presentation and discussion of current issues in psychology which are not considered in other areas. The content varies form semester to semester. The instructor will select a topic or area of interest for discussion based on student interest and current developments in psychology. May be taken as often as course content changes.
Detailed Description of Content of Course
The purpose of this course is to explore topics in psychology which are not offered in regular course offerings. The topics will vary according to instructor and student interests. Some possible topics are:
1. Psychology of Sex and Gender
2. Languages of the Brain
3. Psychology and Religion
4. Social communication
5. Counseling Older Adults
6. Sport Psychology
7. Psychology of Humor
Detailed Description of Course
A seminar format will be used. The instructor and students will present topics of relevance to the issue that is being covered in the course.
Goals and Objectives of the Course
The goals and objectives will vary according to the topics selected for the course. All of the topics will be oriented to expanding the student’s knowledge of pertinent issues. The general goals are to introduce students to important subject matter in psychology, which has current social and scientific interest, to provide the student with an opportunity to discuss current issues, and to help the student integrate current issues relevant to other psychology courses.
Assessment Measures
Graded assignments may include in-class test, a final examination, pop quizzes, the assignment and presentation of exercises, and projects, and class preparation and participation. Graduate students will be provided additional assignments to meet graduate requirements. These assignments may include, research papers or additional readings and evaluation.
Other Course Information
The computer laboratory and other labs in the department will be used as needed.
