COMS 247: Media Production 2B: Writing 

Prerequisites: COMS 130, COMS 146 (C- or better); or permission of the instructor

An introductory media writing course that exposes production students to various forms of script writing for a variety of media professions

Detailed Description of Course

This course emphasizes the writing and scripting processes necessary to prepare material for various types of media productions. Through engagement with a variety of media writing this course prepares students for the expectations of professional writing across the media production industry. Each course exercise will help students develop a greater command of grammar, spelling, syntax, style, format and tone that is appropriate for each form of media addressed in order to best connect with the intended audience.

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

This course will consist of lectures, discussions, and demonstrations. Students may be asked to read material from a required textbook, watch videos, and/or read articles or selections from books. Students will also work on various media writing-related assignments in and out of class.

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

Students will be able to:

1)Write copy in contemporary, professional styles.

2)Recognize standard audio and video script formats.

3)Create and produce scripts for basic announcements, promos and commercials.

4)Write in formats appropriate for documentaries and screenplays.

5)Identify contemporary standards of excellence in production writing.

 

Assessment Measures

1)Tests/quizzes covering course content.

2)Writing exercises/assignments/projects in which students demonstrate a working knowledge of media writing concepts and processes.
