EDUC 610: Problems in Language Arts and Literature (K-8)

Study of problems in communication skills of listening, speaking and writing and literature for children appropriate to early and middle education.
Detailed Description and Course Syllabus
This course is designed to provide for the study of a practical classroom problem in teaching language arts and literature in early and middle education, K-8. One problem will be taken from:
A. Listening
B. Speaking
C. Handwriting
D. Spelling
E. Grammar
F. Composition
A second problem will be taken from Children's Literature:
A. Folk Literature
B. Fantasy
C. Realism
D. Non-Fiction
E. Poetry
The in depth studies will follow this sequence:
A. Definition of problem
B. Survey of literature and conclusions
C. Review and selection of commercial materials
D. Design of creative materials
Students will share their in depth studies in oral and written abstract reports during the summer. A final written report will
be submitted to the instructor for evaluation.

A. Identify a problem in the classroom
B. Conduct research on the problem
C. Evaluate materials available
D. Design materials
E. Present oral reports in seminar
F. Produce a written report on problem
