ATTR 225: Practicum I (Athletic Training)

Prerequisites: Cumulative GPA of 2.75
Corequisites: ESHE 201, ATTR 205

Credit Hours: (1)

Clinical experiences designed to provide students with an appreciation of the various duties of athletic trainers in a traditional setting. This course requires the completion of 60 hours of clinical experience.

Note(s): Students cannot receive credit for both ESHE 225 and ATTR 225.
 

Detailed Description of Content of Course

This course is designed to be taken in conjunction with ESHE 201 and ATTR 205. It will provide students with an appreciation for the duties and responsibilities of an athletic trainer.  Students will be required to examine the NATA (National Athletic Training Association) Educational Competencies and compare them with experiences observed in their clinical rotations.

 
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Students will participate in athletic training activities (including practice and game situations) for 60 hours throughout the semester. These will be directly supervised by a program preceptor. Students will meet with the instructor of the class weekly to discuss various issues related to athletic training competencies.
 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

Students will be able to:

1. Explain the duties and responsibilities of a certified athletic trainer.
2. Identify the various components of the NATA educational competencies and how they relate to athletic training practice.
3. Explain how athletic trainers communicate in various athletic training settings, including written communication methods.
 

Assessment Measures

Assessment measures may include one or more of the following:

• Written assignments
• Practical experience hours
• Guided observation logs
• Written exams
