These workshops are free for all Student Recreation & Wellness members and Radford University students. 

Friday, January 26, 2018 2:00-3:00pm SRWC Classroom Nutrition Approaches: Plan to Achieve Mary Jean Miller, RDN Set yourself up for success in the New Year! Debunk the myths and set a doable plan. This session will expose the common traps of popular diets and present realistic plans for achieving your target weight. Based on findings from the National Weight Control Registry and evidence-based weight management principles.
Friday, February 2, 2018 2:00-3:00pm SRWC Studio 124 Intro to Olympic Lifting: Clean & Jerk Chris Shelor Learn the basics of Olympic Lifting and basic foundations to begin practicing these performance moves. This workshop will focus on the clean and jerk movements. We will start in the studio using PVC pipes and have the oportunity to try these moves in the weight room.

There are many techniques prescribed for improving bench press technique. The problem is knowing which one is most effective for you. Come and get hands on instruction to sharpen your technique. You won’t be learning a system. You will investigate multiple systems to see what produces the best results for you. This is a hands on event and open to all who have interest in performing at their best.
Friday, February 9, 2018 2:00-3:00pm SRWC Studio 117 Mindfulness: Present Moment Awareness Dr. Alan Forrest Join Dr. Alan Forrest to learn more about Mindfulness and how you can practice being more present and enjoy life a little more every day. Mindfulness is the intentional paying attention in the present moment without judgment to unfolding moment-to-moment experiences. Join us for weekly drop-in mindfulness meditation practice groups. The groups will include a period of guided and silent mindfulness meditation followed by a brief discussion. An experienced mindfulness practitioner will facilitate each group meeting. All students are welcome. No prior experience is necessary.

Take control of the high-risk situations that can steer you off track. This session will explore the common hurdles college students face in maintaining healthy weight and present empowering tools to overcome them. Incorporates cognitive and behavioral strategies.

Rules for the bench press competition will be discussed. Be sure that your bests efforts are not disrupted by a mistake in following the competitive rules. Competitors will have an opportunity to practice the bench press with the competition judges.
