Radford University’s Governmental and Nonprofit Assistance Center announces courses for 2019

Radford University’s Governmental and Nonprofit Assistance Center (GNAC) is offering 17 live workshops next year though its joint program with the Virginia Government Finance Officers Association (VGFOA) professional development certificate program.

The schedule includes workshops in Fairfax, Stafford, Richmond, Newport News, Charlottesville and Roanoke. To learn more and view a list of 2019 workshops, visit:  https://www.radford.edu/content/cobe/gnac.html.

Established in 2003, the program requires participants to complete 10 workshops in financial reporting, investment management, budgeting and issuing public debt. More than 250 finance officials in Virginia have completed the program since its inception.

Individuals receive a certificate upon completion of the program.

"If you go to any sizeable local government office, you're likely to find one of our certificates hanging up," said GNAC Director Bruce Chase, a professor of accounting at Radford University. "We have provided professional training for many government finance officials, mainly local government finance officials, in Virginia."

In addition to its partnership with VGFOA, GNAC provides quality professional financial education and technical assistance to governmental and not-for-profit organizations. It has developed alliances, partnerships and other arrangements with other selected professional organizations and associations, such as the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA).

The purpose of these relationships is to identify educational and training needs and to provide programs and delivery systems to meet those needs. This approach allows GNAC to complement the programs of existing professional organizations, Chase said.

GNAC offers a variety of workshops and online seminars throughout the year, covering topics about public sector finance and management that are of interest to local government finance officials.

GNAC is one of many major outreach projects for Radford University Davis College of Business and Economics, Chase said.
