Radford University faculty member Theresa Burriss has been named director of Academic Outreach for the university at the Southwest Higher Education Center in Abingdon.

Burriss began serving as director in September.

She will work to cultivate and strengthen relationships with nonprofits, businesses, other educational institutions and governmental offices and agencies to position Radford University to assist with many aspects of community development in Southwest Virginia.

Radford University is a partner institution with the center and has offered courses there in counselor education, social work and education.

“We intend to increase our offerings next academic year with various business, education and health courses, as well as facilitate student internships throughout Southwest Virginia,” Burriss said. “We have many faculty, staff and students dedicated to serving the region and helping build community capacity.”

At Radford University, Burriss continues to serve as chair of the Appalachian Studies program and is an assistant professor in the university’s School of Teacher Education and Leadership.

“My work in Southwest Virginia on Radford University’s behalf is directly related to Appalachian Studies as my knowledge of the region informs our collaborations with various individuals and organizations,” Burriss said.
