Campus to celebrate diversity at first-ever Unity Fest

Unity Fest

The campus community is invited to celebrate Radford University's tradition of diversity and inclusion at the first-ever Unity Fest on April 22.

The student-organized festival will feature a variety of entertainment activities on Moffett Lawn from 1 to 5 p.m.

The event, organizers said, was planned with the entire campus and surrounding communities in mind. Representatives from several different student organizations sat on the planning committee to ensure a diverse mix of activities for all ages.

"We hope this festival helps build a sense of togetherness for the Radford community," said senior Kevon Dupree.

Dupree, the student representative to the Radford University Board of Visitors, first came up with the festival idea while attending a Virginia Leadership Academy conference. There, several universities shared information about similar events on their campuses.

"I felt like it was time for Radford University to step up and plan a central event where everyone could come out and have a good time," he said.

Dupree, along with Student Government Association (SGA) President Jacinda Jones and the planning committee have been organizing the daylong festival since last semester. Food trucks, a DJ, live performances and games for all ages are on the agenda.

"There will be something for everyone," Jones said.

Interim Dean of Students Susan Trageser said she is proud of the students for collaborating on what she and students hope to be a long-standing tradition.

"It's a wonderful opportunity for students, faculty and local community members to come together and see what Radford University is all about," Trageser said. "In the future, I hope this event will be something all of our students look forward to."

Unity Fest is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the SGA and R-SPaCE.
