Hispanic Heritage Month at Radford

Bienvenidos (flags of hispanic countries

Join the campus community and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a slate of commemorative events.

Organizations around campus have scheduled lectures, dinners, dances, films and more to share aspects of the Hispanic experience. Each will offer unique viewpoints on that experience and encourage dialogue.

One of the cornerstone events, however, is the Hispanic Heritage Guitar Concert, developed by Professor of Music Robert Trent, which will feature student and faculty performances of the music of Spain and Latin America.

The concert will be held in the Hurlburt Student Center Auditorium on Oct. 6 at 8 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

Hispanic Heritage Month is observed annually from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, to celebrate the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. Sept. 15 was significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively. Finally, the American observance of Columbus Day falls within the 30 day period.

Selected upcoming events include:

Hispanic Heritage Month sponsors include the Office of High Impact Practices; the International Education Center; the McGlothlin Fund; the Departments of Foreign Languages and Literatures, Criminal Justice, and Political Science; student organizations Latino Student Alliance, the Spanish Honor Society and Sigma Delta; film distributor Pragda; the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports of Spain; and SPAIN arts & culture.
