Radford University statement on Nov. 29 Chesterfield, Va. bus accident, updated

Radford University has identified as of Tuesday afternoon a total of 19 students injured as a result of Sunday’s commercial motor coach accident in Richmond. The injured students were either treated at the scene or transported to Richmond area hospitals.  One student was discharged today from the hospital. Two students remain hospitalized.

The Home Ride bus, privately operated by Abbott Trailways of Salem, Va. was scheduled to take university students from Richmond on Sunday evening to the Radford University and Virginia Tech campuses after the Thanksgiving weekend break. Shortly after departing its pickup location in Richmond, it was involved in a single vehicle accident and overturned. Based on the information provided today to Radford University by the bus operator, as many as 20 Radford University students were registered as passengers on the bus.

Radford University has been in contact with the RU students who were passengers on the bus and their families to ascertain the well-being of our students, as well as coordinating notification with faculty about missed classes and providing our students necessary on-campus support in the aftermath of this accident.

The accident is under investigation by the Virginia State Police.

Radford University can confirm to-date that 18 Radford University students have been reported injured in the Home Ride bus accident Sunday evening in Richmond, Va. The bus, operated by Abbott Trailways, was scheduled to take Radford University and Virginia Tech students from Richmond on Sunday evening to their campuses after the Thanksgiving weekend break. 

Based on the latest information provided to Radford University by the bus operator, as many as 29 Radford University students were registered as passengers between the company’s two buses scheduled to return to the university last evening. 

Of the 18 injured students, 15 are known to have been treated and released from Richmond area hospitals. The three other injured RU students remain hospitalized. However, there is no information available at this time to indicate that Radford University students are among any patients who may have been critically injured in the accident.

Radford University has been contacting RU students who were passengers on the bus to ascertain their well-being, as well as to coordinate notification with their respective faculty about missed classes and make available, as needed, assistance from the university’s student health center and counseling services.

Radford University’s focus remains on ascertaining the well-being of all Radford Students who were on the bus and providing them necessary support in the aftermath of this accident. Our thoughts go out to our injured students and those of Virginia Tech in making a full recovery and a quick return to campus.
