President Kyle introduces interim Provost

Interim Provost Scartelli

Dear Radford University Community,

The role of provost is integral to the leadership and direction of the university’s academic mission.  With Monday’s announcement that Dr. Sam Minner has accepted a special opportunity to serve as a university president, I feel that it is important that we have an individual fill this vital position on an interim basis as soon as possible.

Accordingly, it is with much pleasure that I announce that Dr. Joseph Scartelli has accepted my invitation to serve a second term as Radford University’s Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, beginning July 13, 2015.

As many of you may know, Dr. Scartelli has a significant amount and depth of experience at Radford University.  He joined RU in 1981, first serving as Program Director of Music Therapy.  In 1988, he assumed the role as Dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA), expertly leading the college to many significant achievements and milestones.  In December 2009, he graciously accepted my request that he serve as Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.  After a successful search process for the provost position, which resulted in the hiring of Dr. Minner, Dr. Scartelli returned to his role as the CVPA dean in July 2011. He served through summer 2014 as dean, whereupon he then took a much-deserved sabbatical before rejoining the CVPA faculty.  Joe Scartelli’s professionalism and leadership during his term as interim provost in 2009-2011 was beyond reproach, and he played a significant role in our university’s many accomplishments.

In addition to asking Dr. Scartelli to return to the role of interim provost for the 2015-2016 academic year, I have also requested that he be prepared to continue serving through the transition of the next president, at which point a search for the next provost will most likely begin.  Not only will Dr. Scartelli’s appointment provide RU with talented and much-needed Academic Affairs leadership and continuity, but his service will also allow my successor to have input on the search process for the next provost with whom he/she will work closely in shaping Radford University’s future beyond 2016.

I hope all of you will join me in congratulating Dr. Scartelli and thanking him for agreeing to serve Radford University as Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and support him in the important work ahead of us.
